Data Avalanche in Scientific Practice and Communication: Risks and Uncertainties
Miguel Ángel Medina
Big Data is already exposing humanity to an unprecedented avalanche of data. The everincreasing amount of available data is opening new opportunities in different fields of human activity, including a growing need of expertise for the proper management of such a huge amount of data. However, at the same time his fact confronts us with new challenges, risks, and uncertainties. This complex and new scenario is particularly evident in scientific practice and in the communication of science based on the publication of research articles in scientific publications. In the present communication, I will discuss these issues critically. I want to reflect on the current situation of scientific activity and publications in relation to this data avalanche, illustrating my reflections with examples taken from the biological sciences.
